"Campsites in Valdres"

Valdres stretches from the lush and watery valleys to the south to the dramatic mountains of Jotunheimen in the north. There are a number of full-service campsites with good activities for the whole family. Some believe that several of them are among Norway's very best. The caravan and caravan magazine will visit some of the sites and will present them to readers in the future.

Leira Camping & Hyttesenter is situated - idyllically located on the Strande Fjord with a short distance to a lively commercial center. This is the place where Viggo Sandvik and Vaselina Bilopphøggers brought inspiration to the song "Fishing in Vallers". Leirav is located approx. 3 km south of Fagernes and has evolved from a small town to a lively commercial center. It will be interesting to see what hides behind all the new buildings at Leira. I roll into the square, which is well sheltered from traffic, and meets a nice sight of nature surrounded by beautiful Strandefjord.

Long family traditions

I am welcomed by a gentle and pleasant general manager and owner, Lars Tore Berg. "It's been a few years since I was here last," I say. - There have been big changes here.

Yes, this place has been undergoing major changes over several years, confirms Lars Tore.

- Can you tell me a little about the place??

- "The area originally originated during Berg Gård, until the railway and Leiraelva were passing by. The AMFI Valdres main center is located today. Parts of the battlefield were used by the tourists on the 50 century. Formally the campsite was founded by my grandparents, Anne Marie and Knut Per Berg in 1961. Grandma drove mostly the place because grandfather commuted to Oslo where he worked in the police. Until 1999, the place was run by the Berg family in common. My parents Eivind and Marit Kavli Berg had the management, while grandparents and grandchildren helped where needed. - From 1988 to 1996, the family also operated a gas station at Fagernes, "- adds Lars Tore.

- You are a busy family and now you have taken over the helm?

- "Yes, I took over in 1999 and extended to full-year operation. The square was built and we received many new year-round campers. The operation went well and profits have been made to constantly new projects and extensions. The wishes of the guests have led to both WIFI and cable TV facilities, so it is dug at cross and across the area "- he smiles.

Active and bathy

Lars Tore invites you for a tour and we start the trip down the marina. Here are beautiful sandy beaches with access to sun loungers and umbrellas. The beach kiosk offers easy dining and pedal boats and canoes for hire are available in the brewery area. The children have their own playground. Who needs a south beach if the weather hits? In the evenings there is a mood inside the party. - "Here is a breeding dance organized three times during the summer season. The bridge is filled with people and the party can be heard all the way to the Fagernes, he laughs. If anyone wants a trip with the party boat, it can be hired by a driver. It also operates taxi traffic on the fjord as needed.

"Do not forget to arrange Nordic championships in water jet! It is very popular, "- adds Lars Tore. We continue on the footbridge to the little island called "Vesleøye". A little gem with hiking trails and an old gazebo. - So charming, I excuse. "Yes, that's a popular place for bridesmaids," says Lars Tore.

Good standard

We pass the area of camping huts, which are scenic, surrounded by tall pine trees.

Can you tell me about the lodging?? - "We have 29 cabins and five apartments. From the quite simple to the fully equipped and high standard. Several of the cabins were completely refurbished in 2016. ", Says Lars Tore, proudly displaying the main building containing a modern sanitary ware, tiled from a wall to ceiling with a good standard. The family rooms are spacious with all imaginable facilities. On the top floor are bright, modern-style apartments with two bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen and living room and private balcony with evening sun. Outside, the kids can romp in the free spaces or in the playground outside. The old tractor is particularly popular with the kids, says Lars Tore.

grass mats

The next stop is in the camping area. Here are flat grass mats with pine trees in several levels and spacious layouts. Leiraelva flows through the landscape and creates an idyllic atmosphere in the area. Some guests have secured great places along the seashore.

"It needs to get a lot of resources and start up such a large facility?

Lars Tore is enthusiastic about continuous extensions. "In 2013 we took over responsibility for the neighboring business. Strandefjorden Fritidspark. Together with the landowner Norbert Kuhn, we run both tourist companies under the same name. About. The 40.000 m2 with stone is driven to fill the 6.000 m2 extra as the campsite today. In high season we employ over 10 people. "-

Who is the typical guest?
- "We have many children's families here and some older couples. Many of our guests have been resident for over 30 over. There are also some tourists from the Netherlands and Germany here. We have space for 200 cars today, of which 100 is permanent residents. "

Popular activity offers

You have many offers in the marina. What else can you do here?
"We are concerned that people will relax and enjoy themselves. But nobody should get bored, "says Lars Tore. - «There are two tennis courts in the area. Fishing possibilities in the river and in the fjord. You know, this is where Viggo Sandvik and Vaselina Bilopphøggers got inspiration for the song "Fishing in Vallers". Here is a great starting point for day trips to Jotunheimen and the Sognefjord. In the winter you can go fishing on the fjord and it is a short distance to ski resorts and ski slopes. For the children we have playgrounds and many activities and lavvoet allows guests to dispose of freely. On gray weather, there is a short distance to the shopping center. In addition, we are collaborating on offers to the guests with the new sports hall "Valdres Storhall", which is close by. Here sports teams come through the year for different events. The square is also a popular gathering point for annual international MC hits and Biker collection for MC veterans. "- says Lars Tore

wilderness Gastronomy

We stop in front of "Eldstogo". A log room with a peat roof. Lars Tore says that there is a meeting room for rent. Here, guests who wish to enjoy traditional, traditional gastronomic cuisine from Valdres, inspired by the wilderness. The tour ends at the reception area. There is an inn and restaurant with all rights, kiosk and terrace with outdoor seating, offering simple food and good drinks. Lars Tore is deeply committed to the well-being of his guests. - "Many good customer feedback inspires us to continue the development of space. Guests who have vacationed here for over 30 years are saying theirs. We are proud of our employees and our tourism product. Welcome to us "- he concludes.
